2000 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) position statement recommends: 

Youth athletes avoid specializing in one sport before puberty. Be encouraged to try a variety of sports. Participation in a particular sport be limited to a maximum of 5 days per week with at least one day off per week from any organizaed physical activity.


2014 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) position statement recommending young athletes

Take a minimum of 2 to 3 months off per year from a particular sport. Only participate in one team of the same sport per season.

Avoid early sport specialization & intensive training due to growing research evidence of overuse injuries and burnout
